Is it okay if I stand over here, shoulder to shoulder with myself, and just moon my protest at China?

ST Forum 23rd July 2004:
Stand shoulder to shoulder with DPM
CHINA has chosen to regard DPM Lee Hsien Loong's private and unofficial visit to Taiwan as a violation of Singapore's commitment to the one-China principle and harmful to Sino-Singapore relations, despite Singapore's unequivocal clarification of its stand on one-China and good relations.
DPM Lee is absolutely correct in his stand that our relations with China are based on equality and mutual respect. Yes, we cannot undermine our right to make independent decisions and damage our international standing - a vital consideration in our dealings with all countries.
Our hitherto categorical support for China will surely stand out more sterling and solid if the rest of the world has no reason to see us as subservient, if not a stooge to China. Given the respect Singapore commands, our small size notwithstanding, it is clearly in China's self-interest to agree to let us disagree.
China's response tests where ordinary Singaporeans stand. Although this issue may seem a storm in a teacup, Singaporeans must stand shoulder to shoulder with DPM Lee. And we will need to clearly affirm our stand if this fracas is taken further.
Nevertheless, I do not call for any outburst of indignation now as to me this issue looks like one that will cool off. Our National Day is around the corner. On that day let every Singaporean remember the challenges we face as we stand up for Singapore. And as we wave our flag, let us do it with greater gusto than ever.
Let us sing with passion and sincerity as we tell the world, 'We are Singapore, Singaporean...'
