Good job dude. FYI, you can use DBS Internet Banking to directly deposit to RED CROSS TIDAL WAVES ASIA, which is one of the payees available.

I think there should be some form of a centralised information centre that can coordinate or at least show what organisation is doing what and focusing on which country.
Otherwise it may turn out to be like another case of too much uncoordinated aid in the Iran earthquake aftermath.

appreciate all your effort in disseminating information, especially the electronic mode of donations such as internet banking that Singaporeans currently overseas can use to make their donations. besides DBS, have other banks in SG establish a link with the Tidal Wave fund too?
on a side note, many organizations are rushing their volunteers to affected regions. i understand that UN is trying to be the main coordinator for relief efforts. given the large number of volunteers, will this be counter-effective, and worse, create greater strain in the resources in Sri Lanak and Indonesia? let's hope that whoever is running the relief effort is able to resolve any political issues (like who wants to be the boss) and distribute the relief packages fairly.
Posted by: yat | Dec 30, 2004 1:14:50 AM
and one more thing. it would be good that organizations that are accepting food donations can specify exactly the type of food that is needed for Sri Lanka, India and Indonesia. general public may not know the culture and dietary habits in the region and some may end up donating foodstuff that is unsuitable for the locals. this is a lesson learned from the relief workers during the Kurds exodus in Iraq in the 90's. the Kurds open up tins of corns, not knowing what to do with it, and dumped them all into the river.
we simply cannot afford to assume, given the dire needs of the people now. they need all the RIGHT help.

fantastic. i was just wondering how to donate specifically to indonesian victims and am glad to see the information for the indonesian embassy verified above. however i've made a couple of calls and have not been able to get through.
have also heard from a volunteer at one of the buddhist groups that they are now urgently in need of cooking utensils, cutlery and bowls/plates to eat from. please donate accordingly!
(update: i referred the volunteer to 2 local melamine companies that my company buys from and i would like to give a heads up on one of them that has agreed to donate melamineware so far. the company is hoover melamine)

sorry in reference to the cooking/eating utensils mentioned above, forgot to mention that they need UNBREAKABLE items.. so things such as melamine or stainless steel are probably the best. thnks

Singapore, 30 December 2004 – Singapore Post (SingPost) today announced it will accept donations from the public via its network of postboxes, post offices, and Speedpost service to offer aid to tsunami victims with immediate effect until 31 January 2005.
SingPost will absorb the postage on all cheques posted to the Singapore Red Cross Society. It will also absorb charges for collection of donations in kind from households.
Drop-off of cheque donations at any postbox
---------------------------------------------------
For the public’s convenience, cheque donations can be dropped into any of the more than 850 SingPost postboxes located all over Singapore.
Members of the public wishing to donate to the Singapore Red Cross Society should make cheques payable to ‘Singapore Red Cross Society’ with ‘Tidal Waves Asia’ written on the back including name, address and contact number, enclose them in envelopes marked ‘Singapore Red Cross Society-Tidal Waves Asia’ and drop envelopes into any postbox.
SingPost will absorb the postage fees for mailing of cheque donations to Singapore Red Cross Society for one month until 31 January 2005.
Donations in kind to Sri Lanka - drop off at post offices, household collection points can call for pickup
---------------------------------------------------
SingPost is working with partner A&T Freight Management Pte Ltd to ship relief supplies to Sri Lanka, which has been one of the worst hit countries in this disaster. Donations of relief supplies such as canned and packaged food, clothing, blankets and sheets, as well as medical supplies are welcomed.
Members of the public wishing to donate these items should pack and bring them to any of SingPost’s 61 post offices located all over the island. Packages should be marked ‘SingPost Aid To Tidal Wave Victims-Sri Lanka’.
SingPost’s Speedpost couriers will also collect donations in kind (items as listed above) from households. Members of the public unable to make the trip to the post office may call 1800-222 5777 to arrange a pick-up. Charges for collection of donations to Sri Lanka from households will be waived until 31 January 2005.
For information, the public can contact SingPost’s toll-free enquiry line 1605.

My company has some disinfectant wipes that we would like to donate specifically to Acheh. Thanks Otterman for your info regarding City Harvest. Have tried calling them but I was too late - they're closed for Xmas Eve. Fortunately my uncle (who's a pastor) knows them quite well.
Just curious... why is it that there are so few organizations assisting in Indonesian relief in contrast with Sri Lanka?

Is there any information on adopting children of lost parents of the tsunami yet? We are interested in this mission...thank you.

I am a computer info specialist, taking detailed info from clients on phone, turning it to on-line info. I want to work with charitable relief funding coordinating. Any ideas?

Hi Grace,
Aceh was plagued with problems by the government unwilling to allow anyone access. Everyon is rathr upset about this but if you do not have an avenue there directly, supplies may b back logged at Bandar Aceh or Jakarta.
Hopefully with Singapore working wiht them, we'll have more avenues soon. Senior officials from UNICEF are working on this as well. It's maddening as the death toll there is extremely high and looks set to escalate even further with disease.

I am deeply concerned about the victims pulverised by the tsunami and I share the same sympathy towards them. I am willing to volunteer in a relief mission by actively going down to the site of disaster or involving anything that can be similarly challenging.
There are just too many ppl looking for monetary aid relief but I do not wish to passively donate money. I will be more willing to reach to the site of disaster and digging from my own pockets.
There are also many ppl volunteering to go and organisations looking for volunteers. I am concerned with whether there are ppl doing the logistics and coordination. So those truly looking to help pls contact me to tell me what I can do! Thanks.
My email is jx_llmaill@yahoo.com.

FOR THE SAKE OF GOD
I want to know how you operate in this Tsunami Disaster because i want to make some donations to those that were affected in Tsunami disaster .
I wont like a situation where my donation will be used for another different thing instead of helping the needy.
