Scared the World Don't Know, "Singapore decides not to sue blogger"

From Hongkong to Bangkok, from USA to South Africa, from Canada to the UK, the refrain rang out, "Singapore decides not to sue blogger".

Scared the world dunno issit?

Some poor PR department working overtime these few days, I think.

Of course "decides not to sue blogger" lah. The fella apologise until cannot apologise any further liao, with the "unreservedly" all over the place. If sue him after he comply, then he unreservedly apologise so hard for what? That apology was A* grade, ok?

Who knows, Opposition politician Chee Joon Suan may even put you in his next book! Like Daw Aung San Suu Kyi like that.

I know some of you are a little sick of the AcidStar story (eh, no hot chicks with tongue sticking out one ah?), but this is grober buzz leh. Whole world knows "Singapore decides not to sue blogger" now. And we are all feeling safer now, right? Did I forget to tell you that "Singapore decides not to sue blogger"? I did? Ok, good.

Here, for your reading pleasure, the world repeating the same, and almost the same, song:

Canada
South Africa
USA
UK
Yahoo/AFP
Yahoo/The Canadian Press
Malaysia
Hongkong
Asia Media Network
Reuters, India
Sydney Morning Herald, Australia
Channel NewsAsia Singapore
TODAY Singapore
Qatar

Canada CNews
Canada CTV
Bernama Malaysia

this is ample proof that we and the rest of the whole world know we have a magnanimous gov. The goodness radiating out of the core of its benevolence will reverberate round the corners of the world, enamating the hearts of one and all for years to come.

very good, Mr Brown!

Posted by: shwe | May 11, 2005 4:45:10 AM

You mean Channel NewsLater actually caught the news in time and not two weeks later?

Oh, and redrown, absolutely superb comment. I can't agree more. Yes, our government is indeed forgiving and flexible. How good of them not to sue AcidFlask. ;p

Posted by: Sheena | May 11, 2005 5:14:26 AM

Wah lau eh, so malu okay. Everytime people hear about Singapore, it's always some ridiculous story of someone kena cane, someone kena fine, someone kena sue. Enough liao hor? I thought we were so world-class and all that bullshit; can we possibly demonstrate our inanity to the world more clearly than by threatening to sue someone for expressing their opinion, then retracting and making a big deal about NOT suing them?
You know, the old chestnut about kids dying, people starving, wars going on? Yeah, why don't we focus on the important stuff...

I am not sure, but I thought it's more damage control than to show the world how magnanimous we are? Goes to show how much damage the gahmen thought py has created that they have to go thru all these?

Posted by: yewmun | May 11, 2005 8:33:33 AM

AcidStar? AcidGate? StarGate? Let's just call it silly. I wonder, though, when/if a blogger will be threatened with a lawsuit and in response, says 'Bring it on!'

But then I'm American, and it says right there in the US consititution that it's permissible to slander/libel any member of any government body. I think on page 3.

MB,

I think caustic has become Singapore's foremost political dissident, replacing gila Chee, as our new spiritual leader. Who knows, when "people power" take over, caustic could be the new president a la Nelson Mandela.

To the Acidstar gestapo, if you are reading this, I am kidding only. I unreservedly apologise for everything I wrote, implied, or could have thought about.

Posted by: singaporean | May 11, 2005 10:31:47 AM

Hey look, any publicity is good publicity. Uniquely Singapore!

We sure have a strange way of winning hearts and minds...

Posted by: jeffyen | May 11, 2005 10:54:28 AM

This entire episode only servers to prove our suspicions right all along.
That all the crap talk about opening up and asking for feedback and engaging the people is just bulls*** and a wayang show.
These people have absolutely no intention or interest nor ability in anyway to receive anykind of criticism or feedback. Used as they are to being a rubber stamps of the dominant powers that be, they too are themselves capable only of accepting views that does not contradict them.
Such is Singapore's Uniqueness..... So much for it... ...

Posted by: No Cowards allowed | May 11, 2005 11:48:26 AM

Hooray. Now President Bush will think that we are a democratic and forgiving society when Mr Lee goes to meet him in July.

Posted by: suspiciousbastard | May 11, 2005 11:48:53 AM

sorely disappointed with these people at the top... acidstar somemore, supposed to preach about creativity and dunno what.. so much for openess and listening to the people. now, not only the local people have lost their R-E-S-P-E-C-T, we're left to be judged and ridiculed by others in the world. As though being laughed about the gum and caning wasn't bad enough. World class ah!

Posted by: sunflowr | May 11, 2005 12:01:59 PM

You must surely realize that Democracy is a menace to right-thinking people everywhere. Common citizens cannot be allowed to question the decisions of their rulers! I urge you to impose strict police control at once!

Posted by: akikonomu | May 11, 2005 2:45:24 PM

Don't be mistaken 'feedback' from 'free-speech'. Singapore government never said b4 this country has free-speech...Here we only have 'be careful what you say abt the government or get sued' and 'talk cock' (this can includes anything not related to government/governmental agencies).

Posted by: mrq | May 11, 2005 4:25:17 PM

Sigh, that is incredible. Just when you think things are getting better for Singapore, a dinosaur like Yeo pops up and reverts to the old 'hang one' to warn a hundred mentality. We need new blood there, cos' the old gits ain't cutting the custard. i don't think PAP is evil, only that there exists a significant influential element who are spectacularly obtuse when it comes to certain areas.

Unless anyone gets fair access to national media channels, it'll be difficult for bloggers to make bigger waves. but the fight goes on.

Here, Yeo and all the other Yellow Emperors wanna-bes, come eat my toe-jam. Size 6 feet? You know what they say about men with small feet....

Posted by: PAP Smeared | May 11, 2005 5:52:00 PM

The act of suing acidflask for libel shows the immense power which the government has. All the talk about the Singapore government being more open to discussion has really been washed down the drain now. Even when PM Lee mentioned to Jamie that he should set up his own web site (or blog for that matter), there's really no free speech!

The Singapore government appears to be technologically efficient, but lacks the intricacies of understanding the culture behind it. A matured government would learn to participate with the grassroots (rest of us) to engage in good clean discussion with AcidFlask openly on his blog (via comments). It's more energy, but is necessary for a true "e-government".

Government is too kiasu, and should learn that "blasting opponents" out of the water with their might reflects the way they play the game... i.e. they bully you till you die. They've really got to learn to take it easy and play fair with the rest of us. No pulling out of their "weapon of mass blogging destruction". It may take more energy, but engaging in civilized debate would have better than the great PR we're getting from all the latest govt. antics. Singapore's govt really missed the boat that could have turned a threat into an opportunity.

Posted by: Kevin | May 11, 2005 8:53:40 PM

I think that the conflation of the mechanism of the state with the government is not always warranted.

Posted by: Agagooga | May 11, 2005 11:19:14 PM

Yar i think one day blogging might be banned in S'pore.
Then we all hafta get obscure domain names in order to do underground blogging.

Its damn stupid lor. Cannot speak our mind, petty little men. Then we use euphemism can. One day we will become 'beat around the bush' country, everything oso muz paraphrase.

Posted by: crap de la crap | May 11, 2005 11:24:54 PM

freedom of speech / right to provide feedback is one thing, but blogging responsibility is another. there has to be a form of protection against rouge bloggers who outright insult people baselessly.

that is, IF the blogger OUTRIGHT insult somebody BASELESSLY.

i don't think the issue is why singapore can sue a blogger, or whether critical blogging is a crime / WMD / controlled activity. it's not new to the world about sg's iron fist over every possible media, but the question i feel singaporeans should ask now is: what exactly were the comments that A*Star or philip yeo felt defamatory?

if the feedback about the need for improvement in A*Star and yeo's work was true, hiding them from the public via means of legal threats is a cowardly disgusting act.

i guess some people can't face up to their own mistakes, that is why they rather 'bring them down' for criticizing their work.

the owner of this website is not liable for any comments left by WhiteOut, which are opinions solely expressed by WhiteOut.

Posted by: WhiteOut | May 12, 2005 12:00:48 AM

If you read between the lines, I think you can pick up a slightly more conciliatory tone in the article. All the talk of tea and the decision not to carry out the lawsuit is slightly unusual for the old school hardline Singapore we knew.

I think even five years ago, the boy would have not been sued but they would have given him a bigger slap on the wrist and there'll be no talk of tea. This is a baby-step forward (ok lah, maybe if the baby was the offspring of a Hobbit and a Midget)....but i think this is progress by govt. standards.

It is a long way to go before they are really open to diverse opinions as Towkay Lee's Kia said, but its too soon to give up on the experiment.

This doesn't change the fact that Phillip Yeo has a tiny weenie and the sooner that the Lee family dynasty joins the Marcoses and the Suhartos in history's junkyard, the better.

I fart in P.Y's general direction!
*POOT*

why do people feel they can just dump their advertisings on other people's home sites? how rude! hey idiots! we don't go to your house and shit, do we? if you have just a tiny bit of intelligence you'd realize that when you piss us off by doing this to a place we all like to come to have a good time, you only make yourselves look like a bunch of cockroaches. and who in their right minds would want to have anything to do with cockroaches? somehow, judging by your no-class stunt, i get the distinct impression you're pretty damn lousy at whatever you do in life as well. bunch of miserable low lifes. god must'a forgot to plug in the IQ machine on you, you losers.
