So you think you can be a Singapore-style star?
We are at the in-laws and the tv no one is watching is on. It's showing the Star Search finals, where finalists are vying to be the next crop of Singapore's Chinese tv celebrities.
Wife to me: I thought this was an acting competition? Why are the finalists doing stunts?
Me: The Star Search contestants must show they can perform in charity shows too mah. That's their staple work too, you know.
Wife: So this is for Most Able to Attract 1-900 Donations in Charity Stunt Shows Star lah.
Me: I wonder how the Hong Kong celebrity judges feel having to give their comments on the stunt segment.
Wife (in Chinese): "Your expression when you were perched on the ladder was very touching and able to make viewers feel so sad they will call the donation hotline. Well done, contestant S8."

Exactly what I was thinking when I saw the contestants doing the stunts. That's really shows nothing about their acting skill, how I missed Jeff Wang and his crab...

Star Search is like BMT. If you can act, sing and do stunts (wayang), you qualify for OCS (Mediacorp), and have chance to sign on and become high flyer. 我飞得最高最远…… :p

They have to do stunts...because....no more stuntmen available....D.I.Y in most serials.
Cut costs, stuntmen out of jobs.
So this is the most basic requirements.

When I saw the contestants singing while they were acting, I told my wife: Are they going act at Bollywood or Broadway?

Oh dear.. TCS is looking for all-rounders who can also perform during their numerous charity shows. It's so hard to aspire to be a star artiste here. So different from Zoe Tay's time.

I was flipping channels that evening and came across the stunts segment of the show as well. Why is it that many of us will ponder and wonder why this is at all relevant to an acting competition, and yet this thought has never at one point of time cross the minds of the many MANY producers of this show?? It's like asking contestants of American Idol to showcase their cooking capability. Look how they can cook AND sing!! BRAVO!

-talk "dirty"...e.g "pang sai", "don't talk cock" "..like a straw up your nose" etc
-perform miracles...bring down oil prices/raise from the dead, create phantom train etc
