Suggestion for interim measure while upgrading Whitley Road Detention Centre CCTV system
The ministerial statement mentioned that there were two non-working CCTV cameras, where Mas Selamat climbed out of the Family Visitation Block, because of the security surveillance system upgrades happening at the time.
This is unfortunate. So I tried to think of what we can do the next time upgrading is happening so that this kind of thing will not happen again. I also wanted to choose a cost effective solution. I found these:
SVAT ISC200 Outdoor Imitation Security Camera with Blinking LED
I highly recommend this model because it has a blinking LED and an actual wire, so that detainees will think they are working CCTVs and not try anything funny.
Another highly recommended add-on is this Video Surveillance warning sign. Pair the imitation security camera (with blinking LED) and this fierce-looking sign, and you'll have a solid detainee deterrence program in place, while the real cameras are being upgraded (and not working).
I only ask that if the Ministry of Home Affairs likes my idea and buys these in bulk, they use my Amazon Associates ID, mrbrown-20, so I can get some extra commission on the Associates program.
From the imitation security camera blurb:
"Want to deter intruders or vandals without spending a lot of money on a security system? Then SVAT's imitation security cameras are the solution for you. The ISC200 is an imitation camera that looks like a real security camera. With the same external components as a functioning security camera, the ICS 200 is a realistic crime prevention investment.
The activation LED light flashes also making the camera look like it is in operation. The actual wire adds reality. Neighbors and visitors will think that you have a complete video surveillance system. This unit can be easily mounted and aimed with its adjustable bracket. Help prevent or deter suspicious activity by placing the security camera in a noticeable place.
The ISC200 can also heighten the effectiveness of an existing security system at a low cost. This camera decoy will make people think twice about stealing or doing damage to your property. Have fun watching how customers and employees react when they think they are being video taped.
This camera looks and functions like the real thing giving you no need to spend money on expensive cameras. This is a great visual deterrent for shoplifting, theft and vandalism. Perfect for any domestic or commercial use such as an office, retail space, business or home. Imitation cameras have demonstrated success in many types of home and businesses such as motels, retail stores, museums, apartments restaurants, automobile lots and many others. ISC200 can also act as a housing for a real camera."

But, isn't it a very simple [security] logic that since there are two cameras, why wasn't the upgrading be done one after another? So strange.

Cant believe that the camera is not working. Should have back up

@back2nature
dude, the head of the compound is a guy who say its OK not to have grilles implicitly by not contracting another contractor to install them, and is somebody who says that sawing off the handle makes the toilet secure explicitly.
with his high intelligence, diligence and pay (Army equivalent rank: LTC, so he must be a scholar of sorts, or super zai kind, judging from exp in the Army), he failed to realise that the ROOF could be used as a platform to jump over the fence. and, he did not put triple con wire, and/or other stuff, to deter people from doing stunts.
indeed, they are meant to do great things, like deciding to upgrade two cameras at one go to create a very big "black hole" in the compound's security.
lol.. so, do u still expect him to be a person to say "upgrade one at a time"?
he probly thinks that if he upgrades TWO at the same time, the cameras would be up faster.

@deliciali
true to a certain extent. to say that it is 100% true, have to wait for mas selamat and gang's explosive return. then again, in such a situation the govt would probly cover up for the ISD, kill off a few careers, and then remind us of the ISD's good performance in the PAST again.
____________________________________________________
maybe they are taking this rehabilitation and treating them like a normal human being thingie too seriously.
at the end of the day, they are/were terrorists. they need to wear a tag that allows the ISD to find them at any time, sets off alarms when tampered with or when the tag is out of the compound... or both.
and CCTVs that are working.
if not, have armed guards at the area where the CCTVs are down. what?! u mean the superintendent didnt think of that?
http://tnp.sg/news/story/0,4136,162778,00.html?
TNP calls it luck, but it is ultimately the failure of all those involved to execute their duties in a timely manner, failure to realise that they are guarding terrorists with WORKING KNOWLEDGE on how to wage a low intensity conflict, their unwillingness in deploying armed guards at the places without CCTV coverage (CCTVs/sensors are 'force multipliers', without them u have to put the actual 'force'), and their willingness to treat them as a docile 'normal human being'.
oh, and the zhar bor who must contact a male...
that one i really have nothing to say, i dunno wats going on in her mind. then again, the same could be said about ALL women. lol...
however, hindsight is 20/20, so perhaps it is not fair for me, or anyone to talk so much crap even when it is the careers of those involved. our education and upbringing does not allow us to think 'outside the box', afterall.
so perhaps it is time for the SPF to hire contractors/experts to 'escape' from prison or watever facilities, so that they can implement things to make the facility more secure. or learn from our western/israeli allies.
after typing so much, i need a toilet break.

Eh...they really no one to blame anymore issit?
Or the don't even bother to think of "proper" excuses anymore and just recycle old ones?
I think they blamed the cameras for some MRT incident which no one saw too, you know....

Tell me which CCTV are working, remember, the SMRT CCTV were not working in the past also. Maybe they should change suppliers. Get a tender soon.
