Doreen is an British expat working in Singapore for the first time, and she went to the NDP Facebook page to complain about not being able to get NDP tickets due to the balloting.
Well and good, since she is entitled to whinge about the scarcity of these NDP tickets. But then somewhere down the thread, she says this:
Doreen Everitt: "I'm not on holiday, I live and work here. And like most overseas people we are here at your request to make sure your country makes money from our expertise."
She also says:
"Your government brings us in to work here because you don't have the skills. Don't knock us because believe it or not there is more foreign money in Singapore than anything else. If we all pulled out you would be a very poor and lonely country. Be grateful that there are people like us willing to give up our country, our ways to actually come and work for you and your government. Singaporeans are not the most friendly of people to be around."
Dear Doreen, I am so grateful you left your country to help our poor and lonely little country to survive. Without the epic expertise you bring, we Singaporeans will be floundering in our little corner of Asia.
Our government should really set aside an entire stadium of NDP tickets for you so that you can enjoy our celebrations. In fact, we should even have a march past just for expats like you, who have made such sacrifices to grace our shores. Instead of our President, we should put you there, so that we can honour you because without you, where will we be?
Truly, you are here, Doreen, to fulfill your beneficent role to lift us non-Western peoples from our quagmire of poverty and ignorance. To quote Rudyard Kipling:
Take up the White Man's burden--
Send forth the best ye breed--
Go bind your sons to exile
To serve your captives' need;
To wait in heavy harness,
On fluttered folk and wild--
Your new-caught, sullen peoples,
Half-devil and half-child.
After all, we are just a little ex-colony, and a little trading port and fishing village in the South China Sea. We hope to one day shake off our loincloths and savage ways, with the magnanimous help of Doreen, so that Singaporeans can finally take our place in the world economically and socially.
Hey, I may be wrong and Dorren Everitt may be a fake person and set up for trolling. But if she is for real, then you have to excuse us for being pissed off at this condescending display of douchebaggery. Hey Doreen Everitt, not happy here, go home lah.
