There are other people who struggle with the stigma of disabilities that cannot be seen easily. mrs budak shares her story.
Some of you know that my younger brother is suffering from schizophrenia.
For many years I did not reveal this to anyone outside the family, other than those I confide in. What surprised me was, some of the friends I confided in shared with me in turn their own struggle with mental illness in the family.
I wasn't open about this not to protect myself, but to protect my brother. How will I know if my "friends" will not shun him once his medical condition is out in the open? So for many years, not many people knew. I referred to him vaguely as a "relative" but I'm sure many people suspected it.
