We watched half the NDP at my mom's then rushed home to catch the fireworks because we have a unobstructed view of the Padang and Marina South fireworks (we can also see the fireworks when they have the parade at the National Stadium).
And when the whole family gathers to catch the NDP on TV, everyone's a comedian. Here are some quotes overheard at our own little gathering.
****
Me: "Eh, why got PAP contingent in the parade but no Opposition contingent ah?"
Grandparent of my kids who shall remain unnamed: "They not enough people mah."
****
"Wah, the Choir Mistress very chio ah? Wear that Vietnamese cheongsam and gelek gelek ah."
****
Me: "Eh? This year never hear the jets fly past our flat going back to Paya Lebar ha?"
Grandparent of my kids who shall remain unnamed: "These new jets are modern one, got silent engine."
(later they did fly by, so maybe they were flying with third gear this time.)
****
Grandparent of my kids 1: "Hey look at the ministers about to sit down but stopping halfway, because they spotted the senior ones have not sat down yet."
Grandparent of my kids 2: "They sit down before the old guys tomorrow sure kena pay cut one."
****
Grandparent of my kids 1: "Wah, so many different uniforms!"
Grandparent of my kids 2: "You know what all the soldier wearing that is the same? Pampers, because at the Padang parade there no toilet. You don't believe me? Go NTUC, all the Pampers no stock."
****
Me: "Hey why those army tanks dragging a load of grass (camouflage)?"
Grandparent of my kids who shall remain unnamed: "They are carrying reclaimed land!"
****
"Wah look! The jets are returning from the Padang, flying so low over us! Maybe they are rushing to refuel at the Shell station nearby, maybe they also received the hoax SMS about the 40% National Day petrol discount."
****
"Fiona Xie so poor thing ah, cannot perform at Padang have to perform at Tampines."
****
Me: "Fireworks! Fireworks! Quick! Everyone to the kitchen!"
Grandma of my kids: "Aiyah, how come the NDP fireworks so short one!"
Me: "They used up the fireworks for the other days already."
Mommy: "It is so weird to be watching the fireworks with the sounds of the Seventh Month Wayang downstairs."
