The Chinese New Year holiday was a long weekend of holiday movies on TV. My family responded to that exciting fare by going out to watch a movie, something we have not done in a while, with the rising movie ticket prices. But give me Jet Li in Fearless anytime over Jet Li in Black Mask.

Mind you, the Chinese movie Black Mask was showing for the umpteenth time (what is known as an encore performance) as a holiday programme.

I suppose when you are meant to be out and about doing your New Year visitations, you are not supposed to care about what's being aired.

I mean, you would never be able to stay long enough to watch the whole show anyway, so why show you recent blockbusters, right?

Beer survey phone call

My youngest brother gets a phone call from some lady to prescreen candidates for a beer market survey. Shortlisted candidates get paid to attend a focus group and view some commercials.

Telemarketer: So have you heard of the beer brand, Hoegaaden?

Brother: Yes.

Telemarketer: What about Corona?

Brother: Yes.

Telemarketer: What about Tiger, Anchor and Kilkenny?

Brother: Yes, I've heard of them.

Telemarketer: Ok. Then have you heard of Stella Ah Tui?

Brother: ?!!

The Swan II, after the kids are asleep

Watching the extreme makeover copycat show, The Swan season 2 with the wife. The two candidates who have just seen their new zhnged faces and bodies await with bated breath (must. keep. smiling.) as the host announces the one who will go on to The Swan pageant (to become the ultimate Miss Zhng 2006, I suppose)...

Me: So what happens when you don't win this round, and don't get to be in The Swan finals?

Wife: You have to return the fake boobs, the fake nose, the fake butt...

Me: Look! The taller one has been chosen! She looks so happy she is laughing and crying at the same time!

Wife: Don't laugh so hard, girl! Wait your new nose fall off!

Our evil laughter muahahas into the night.

Date Night: 新绿 Yakitori Restaurant

We are at Purvis Street. The wife is having rice and I'm having the udon soup with pearl mushrooms. We order the grilled atsuage tofu, chicken with sesame sauce, green asparagus wrapped with bacon, and the pork with garlic yakitori style.

Everything tastes great, even though I am sick and have a poor appetite (hence the soupy choice). Sick also must eat.

We are the first customers for the evening, and the wife tells me the place is quite packed during lunch. We are heartened to see many Japanese customers come in after us. If they think the Japanese food here is good enough for them, it must be quite good. It is.

On the wall, the menu in English and Japanese. They even have a Mystery special (see the ??? in the picture) for $4.80. Next time must try that.

I Wish I Knew How to Quit You

Presenting multi-Oscar nominated short film (and even a pending Mediacorps Star Awards nomination), a tribute to Ang Lee's Brokeback Mountain, the short film Broke Mac Mountain.

Shot "with painstaking detail to replicate the sweeping panoramas and majestic beauty of Mr. Lee's cinematography", this short is emotionally draining in its depiction of forbidden love. I was in tears by the end of it, ROTFLMAO in tears.
