You can tell the elections are coming from the status messages you see on Facebook.
Like this one from my friend about a recent visit from a Member of Parliament (MP):
"AHHHH!!! SOME MP GUY WANTS TO VISIT AND SOME FELLA CLEARED MY POTS!!!!!!!!!!! HOW ARE THEY GONNA WIN VOTES LIKE THAT??? SEVERELY IRRITATED!"
Yes, in all caps.
Apparently, the local grassroots supporters, in their enthusiasm to clear the path for the ruling party candidate to do their house-to-house visits, took away her large collection of potted plants along the common corridor of her flat.
It seems they thought it unsightly.
Her subsequent comments under that Facebook status were also in caps. This coming from someone who says she actually likes the People's Action Party. I think it is now in the past tense. (cont'd)
"…so you can see the latest photos of Tin Pei Ling, and to help us have more outreach"
The rest of the Singapore Twitter crowd found this reply so bizarre that they retweeted it. Some people asked me privately if the PAP Twitter account was actually a parody one, or if it had been hacked (Nope, looks like the real thing).
Then on PAP's Facebook page, this self-congratulatory message appeared:
"PAP Twitter account @PAPSingapore continues to make waves in the SingaporeTwitter sphere... contiuously [sic] getting re-tweeted"
If that isn't a *facepalm* series of events, I do not know what is.
I think we need to distinguish between Tongue-in-cheek and Foot-in-mouth.
I like how ST said the "joke was on them", referring to those who believed that Miss Tin was really in trauma, as SM Goh said. It is more like the joke was on SM Goh, for making a "joke" that people believed to be true, and even brought out concern for her.
And it was not even April Fools' Day when GCT cracked his "joke".
What's SM Goh going to "tongue-in-cheek" joke about next? That some new candidate has been run over by a car?
A FACEBOOK post by Senior Minister Goh Chok Tong caused a stir among netizens and the media on Saturday, when he announced that People's Action Party new candidate Tin Pei Ling had been checked for trauma.
But the joke was on them, when SM Goh clarified later that he had meant it as a 'tongue-in-cheek' post.
On a status update posted around 5.30 pm on the MParader Facebook page, SM Goh said: 'Young Pei Ling has been traumatised. Saw her yesterday with trauma specialist, Fatimah.
'While doc examined her, I observed. Her initial hurt n pain have subsided. Gave her clean (bill) of health. In the process, discovered steel in her. She will grow in strength.'
But thank you if you thought we were worthy to even run for office. We are touched by the words of support. I doubt we would stand up to the intense scrutiny that an election would put us under. Miyagi has some skeletons in his closet you don't want to know about (hint: he likes to wear women's clothes).
We have both served NS, don't own Kate Spade bags (ok, Miyagi has a Kate Spade baby bag but he ordered it cheap online) and we come from humble backgrounds that we will repeatedly remind you of.
I am sure you will agree, we will make fine Members of Parliament.
This is PAP's new candidate, Dr Janil Puthucheary, seen in a PAP introduction video, doing his doctorly thing. Dr Puthucheary is the son of PAP founding member and former ISA detainee Dominic Puthucheary, and has been a Singapore Citizen since 2008.
In a recent press interview, the younger Puthucheary said:
"…As for criticism that he did not serve national service, as he became a Singapore citizen at the age of 35, the paediatrician said he has been in public service: 'I've spent the last 10 years saving kids' lives.'"
I am not sure that was a satisfactory response to many Singaporean males. I have no doubt he is a fine doctor and he served the public in this way. But getting all defensive like that just made him look like an arrogant fellow to blokes who have served their NS time (2-2.5 years of active service and 10 years of reservist).
I liked how Catherine Lim (I think it's THE Catherine Lim but I cannot tell because her profile photo is that of a panda. Update: it's the OTHER Catheine Lim) responded to this in a Facebook comment:
"#Module 102 to candidates after lock up all your private photos on internet: Don't respond defensively. Yes I know I did not serve NS, I have a harder road ahead and this is how I want to serve Singapore …Yes I did break a promise to my wife, but we have talked about it she is behind me 100%. My father has supported my decision, there is no betrayal. What came out online was negative reaction and opinion, don't dis the opinions, respond with a positive. Loss an opportunity there Puthucherry."
