Meryl Streep shows her acting chops in this Iron Man prequel
It's Oscar time! As usual, most of us have NO FREAKIN' IDEA about the much-lauded films. I am waiting for the live broadcast of the Academy Awards for Movies We Have Actually Heard Of.
Oscar movies are mostly movies you say you want to watch, and way after the winning movies have come and gone from our cinemas, way after the Limited Edition DVD with 16 different commentaries in 19 languages has been released, way after the illegal download threatens to die in the hard drive that is making clicking sounds, we still say to ourselves, one day, I will watch it.
Regardless, there are some movies that we still recognise. Like Best Picture nominee, The Help (also known as White People Save Racism), which I watched on a plane. That was a heartwarming film. And Octavia Spenser deserved that Best Supporting Actress win.
Another one I recognise: The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, which was nominated for Best Supporting Actress (Rooney Mara) but won for Best Editing. Plenty of Man Hate in that movie. I winced at some of the scenes.
Moneyball was also enjoyable. My wife will watch anything with Brad Pitt (and Keanu Reeves) in it. Brad Pitt could be just sitting there watching paint dry and my wife would watch the movie. Good thing the baseball movie was fairly enjoyable even for those who don't understand baseball.
Man or Muppet by Bret McKenzie won Best Song for The Muppets. Granted, it only had one other rival in the song from Rio, but it is an awesome song from an awesome reboot of the Muppets Franchise. I really enjoyed the Muppets movie, I must say, and interviewing them too (in case you missed my interview video, here it is again).
And big congratulations to Meryl Streep for winning the best actress Oscar for her portrayal of Iron Man's mother.
Best Picture, Best Director and Best Actor winner, The Artist, disappointingly, did not win any Oscars in the Sound Category.
I wonder if the sequel of Ghost Rider will get nominated for the next Academy Awards. I did ask a friend who watched it, just out of curiosity, if Nic Cage and his motorbike from Hell was worth watching again.
Me: "So how was Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance?"
Friend: "It made Ghost Rider 1 look like The Dark Knight."
Right. Shall give it a miss then. Or save it for Crappy Movies DVD Night with friends.
Speaking of intense competitions, Singapore moves up 1 spot to take 135th out of 179 in World Press Freedom index. Yay! We improved! Suck it, Uganda! Let's hear it for our newspapers here!
I also had to explain "compete" to my boy, Isaac, in Chinese recently, when I had to help him with his homework. Yes, mrbrown helping his 8-year-old son with CHINESE homework. We're scraping the bottom of the barrel here but what to do, wife was busy with Joy's homework.
Me: "Ok, read the sentence."
Isaac:"你参加过游泳比赛吗?"
Me: "And what does it mean?"
Isaac: "Have you ever pooped in the pool?"
Me: "That's Pang Sai. This is Bi Sai."
Sigh.
