Man, I'd hate to make a newspaper photographer/editor buay song with me. Look at this photo of beleaguered Pastor Kong Hee of City Harvest Church, who, along with four others, has been charged by the authorities with alleged misuse of church funds to fund the pop music career of his wife, Ho Yeow Sun.

Not the most attractive photo, methinks.

Heck, if I was in trouble with the law, and I pissed off the press, my newspaper photo may look like this:

I think GE2011 would've been an even more interesting GE if this case was announced back then. But of course, gahmen needed a lot of time to investigate mah. The delay had to do with GE one. Now to see if people have long memories in GE2016.

Talking about names and the schoolyard practice of making fun of names, Miyagi's nickname started as a racist taunt and mine was due to my habit for saying "How Now Brown Cow" a lot.

And I used to be called Mickey Mouse in NS, because my Sergeant pronounced my name that way: LeeKinMun -> Mickey Mao. To this day, some army mates still call me that when they see me after a long time, because that is the only name they remember.

I wear all my nicknames with pride.

Slow News Day at STOMP since STOMPgate

My friend Gwee spotted this shocking piece of citizen journalism at STOMP today. It was a photo of an animal swimming — NAKED — in MacRitchie Reservoir.

This is scandalous! Why are there actual animals wandering in the wild, in our very own reservoirs? Why are they swimming in the very waters that we drink?

If it wasn't for SPH's STOMP, I would not have known about the dark underbelly of our nature reserves.

Is there any government authority looking into this? Is this even a local monitor lizard? Did anyone check whether this is one of those foreign talent monitor lizards who come to Singapore to steal jobs from local monitor lizards?

I am shocked that the monitor lizard was swimming naked. Why is he, a Monitor, setting a bad example for other young lizards? This is why he is not a Prefect. Also, doesn't this lizard know that swimming is not allowed in our reservoirs? And is the lizard swimming during school hours? Is the lizard on his way to meet his girlfriend monitor lizard to make out in the MacRitchie River void deck, in full view of the public, in their school uniforms?

But I have to admit, I have been a little skeptical since the STOMPgate incident, where a STOMP Content Producer was caught uploading a fake open MRT door photo under a pseudonym.

How do I know if this monitor lizard was taken by a REAL anonymous member of the public or just an SPH employee masquerading as an anonymous member of the public?

Was this lizard photoshopped into the reservoir? Is this even taken in Singapore?

My faith in the journalistic integrity of STOMP, nay, all of Singapore Press Holdings, has been shaken to the core since STOMPgate. How will I ever trust local mainstream media or mainstream-media-backed citizen journalism EVER AGAIN? How will I ever know if the photo of an open MRT door or the blurry photo of an unidentified object with blinky lights flying over Bukit Batok is really the truth?

Regardless, I feel we need to get NParks to investigate this lizard. Ask for his ez-link card to see where he really went. I demand that the poster of this photo come forward to accompany NParks to verify the identity of this monitor lizard. I think true citizen journalists would stand by their monitor lizard photos and not hide behind the anonymity of the STOMPisphere.

STOMPizens should be aware that the nation expects them to maintain and uphold the highest levels of journalistic ethics, and any transgression will undermine the very trust that our people have developed for the mainstream media here.

STOMPizens are to be the beacons of truth and light, standing shoulder to shoulder with the organization that gave birth to the site that made it all possible. Yes, STOMPizens, you are a reflection of SPH, your mother ship.

You don't want people to call STOMP, "Straits Times Ownself Manufacture Photos", do you?

Take a leaf from SMRT, whose officers displayed more investigative journalism skills than any local mainstream media, when they looked into Ms Samantha Francis's open MRT door allegations.

I am glad that SPH found a lowly employee to fire so that Management and the editorial leadership above her were not hurt by her lies and poor journalistic practices. The nation would never recover from such a blow if senior people had to be accountable every time one of their junior staff did something wrong.

Back to the monitor lizard news, I think NParks needs to talk to each and every animal in the MacRitchie forest reserve to see if they have their papers. Maybe ride there in their new $2,200 Brompton foldable bicycles. And while they are at it, NParks should also get LTA to check if the animals have parked their cars properly, and not in handicapped lots or across two parking lots.

The only true monitor lizard is a monitor lizard who has served NS. Only then has he earned the right to swim in our reservoirs. We must not let monitor lizards who have not done their national duty flood our nation's forests and strain our national infrastructure and sully the very social fabric of our fragile nation.

STOMP should send one of their content producers to the reservoir to see if they can catch some more of these monitor lizards in the act, and then share more photos with us while pretending to be an anonymous member of the public. We do not expect any less of this bastion of journalistic integrity.

STOMPizens and STOMPistaff, we await your next scoop. I hear there are also animals cavorting in the Night Safari. Maybe you guys can check that out too.

STOMP kena STOMPed

Ms Samantha Ann Francis, a STOMP content producer (STOMP is the "citizen journalism" site of SPH) was fired for posting a photo of an MRT train running with one set of its doors open, which was found to be false. The photo was posted by a user named "wasabi" which was later revealed to be the STOMP staffer.

I am not sure if she was fired because she posted a fake photo, or because she posted it as an anonymous member of the public, or both.

Is it the practise of SPH to allow their staff to post "scoops" as anonymous "STOMPers". I wonder?

I was most amused at the photo of Ms Francis showing SMRT where she boarded her imaginary train.

According to the (now-deleted) article on Asiaone:

Ms Samantha Francis, 23, a content producer with citizen journalism website Stomp, had uploaded a photo on Wednesday morning showing one of the train doors wide open.

She claimed that the train was traveling despite the open door and only closed when it reached the next stop at Chinese Garden.

Ms Francis had boarded the train at 10.15pm on Tuesday night. She told The Straits Times that after the train stopped at the station, the doors on the opposite side to the platform opened first. She then took a picture through the closed doors in front of her. When the doors in front of her opened, she entered the train and took another picture of the opposite doors, one of which remained open until the train stopped at the next stop at Chinese Garden.

Ms Francis said a Chinese man in T-shirt and bermudas and an Indian man were in the same carriage as her.

Yesterday, she met with SMRT staff at Lakeside MRT to assist in their investigations. She showed them where she was standing when she took the photo and described what she was wearing that night to help SMRT identify her in CCTV footage.

When asked by SMRT staff if her current ez-link card was the one used that night, Ms Francis answered yes.

However, SMRT told The Straits Times in a statement on Thursday that Ms Francis was not present at Lakeside MRT.

"We thank (Ms Francis) for coming forward today to assist us with our investigations. We are checking a few more things, as from our records (CCTV footage and ez-link card trip details), she was not at Lakeside MRT station on 19 June," said the statement.

Gold Coast: From Montville to Surfers Paradise

One of the advantages of self-drive is you can make detours to your itinerary without a fuss (thanks Hertz, for the car!). On our drive back from Noosa to Gold Coast, we decided to drive to the Montville hinterland.

Montville is a quaint town in the mountains with craft shops, specialist boutiques, galleries and cute cafes.

My wife, ever the scone fan, was determined to find Poets Cafe and have tea with scones there.

We got a little lost driving in Montville, trying to get back to the highway to Gold Coast. Our GPS got confused due to some road closures. But getting lost was how we stumbled across some stunning scenic lookouts and a road that cuts through a forest of giant trees. It was totally worth it.

We finally got to Surfers Paradise and checked into the new Hilton Surfers Paradise. This is a swanky hotel near the beach. This is the view from our room.

The next day, we explored Surfers Paradise and decided to go Jet Boating. The high-speed 45-minute ride takes you to some awesome man-made islands around the Broadwater area and you can see the waterfront mansions of the rich and also wallabies eating seaweed on deserted mangrove islands.

I had some dubious oyster earlier and my tummy wasn't well, so on hindsight, it may not have been a good idea to take a jet boat that does white-knuckle 360º turns every time the jet boat pilot/tour guide makes a circle in the air with his finger.

That's the wife on the right. I shan't show you my own face because it was green. We were all in raincoats and life jackets. Trust me, you need to wear the provided raincoat. Lots of splashing water when the jet boat twists and turns during the thrill bits.

After the jet boat ride, we walked along the Mariners Cove Marina to have lunch. The wife wanted fish and chips. Again.

This bird hung around for a piece of the action from my wife's fish and chips. His patience was rewarded with some chips. We are just glad they didn't tell his friends to come for the buffet too.

Sunset was spent walking along Main Beach. Very feeling hor?

Even though it is winter (12-22ºC temperatures) there were still some surfing.

No, I told this bird. I don't have any fish and chips with me. Just memories of a lovely time with the wife on this relaxing trip to the Gold Coast and Sunshine Coast.

Sunshine Coast: Driving to Noosa

When we were told we were going to Noosa, the wife and I wondered, "Noo-what?"

But our three-hour drive from Mount Tamborine to Noosa, in our lovely Ford Falcon XR from Hertz was pleasant and fun. Noosa is north of Gold Coast, along the Sunshine Coast. It is more chill and less in-your-face than Gold Coast, and the wife and I loved it.

We stayed at the Noosa Entrance Waterfront Resort, run by the friendly Brad and Judy. Our townhouse apartment faces the man-made canal that leads to the Noosa River, with views similar to this private residence, pictured above. You can fish and kayak on the canal right in front of your apartment.

By the time we settled into our townhouse, it was late evening. We had dinner at The Boathouse, a floating restaurant and bar on the Noosa River, very romantic. This bird (I mean a real bird) seemed to be waiting for some service at the Fish and Chips counter of the Boathouse but no one came.

The next morning, Judy took us to The Original Eumundi Markets, that open on Wednesdays and Saturdays. The wife had a ball shopping at the stalls here.

The wife picked out some hand-blown glass jewelry and a cutting board from Nature's Cutting Boards, while I stuffed myself with giant strawberries. We also bought a handmade necklace made of amethyst and pearls for my mom, and a pendant for her mom. I bought Waterman's handmade Castille soap because they smelled so nice and are made of good stuff. I love good soaps and I have sensitive skin, so call me Metro Man.

You can also take photos with a real live snake, or take the children to the storytelling area.

I saw some cool banjo guitars made with cigar boxes, from the Bottleneck Blues stall too.

We wanted to lunch at The Spirit House in Noosa but it was fully booked. It a Thai restaurant located in lush bamboo surroundings and it has a cooking school inside.

You cannot go to Noosa without checking out their lovely beaches and the national park right at the beach. We got there at sunset and the view was splendid. People were surfing, jogging, fishing and just sitting in the sand. Like I said, chill.

Dinner was at Sirocco, a restaurant located at Gympie Terrace with a great view of Noosa River.

On Sunday morning, Judy took us to the Noosa Farmers Market, open every Sunday. It had farm-fresh produce and food stalls that sold everything from Japanese gyozas to German sausages.

I couldn't resist buying a bunch of roses from the flower stall for my Lady.

I didn't feel I got enough of Noosa but we had to drive back to the Gold Coast. I shall be back to spend more time chilling here. Maybe my next trip here, I shall try whale watching, barra fishing, and going to Fraser Island.

These must be the nicest kidnappers in the world

Gold Coast: Mount Tamborine

Mount Tamborine is a really idyllic place to spend some chill time. Besides the gorgeous views we had from our cottage, we frequently had "visitors". These birds are certainly not shy. I suspect they thought we had food for them.

We also visited their shopping street, Gallery Walk, full of quaint shops. The wife insisted on checking out the German Cuckoo Clock Nest store, filled with German-made cuckoo clocks. The elaborate ones were A$1000-A$2000, a little out of our reach. Haha!

There were also wineries galore here, like the Mount Tamborine Winery & Homestead. You cannot miss the giant bottle sculpture of theirs.

No visit to Mount Tamborine is complete without a walk through their national parks. We tried the Curtis Falls walk, that took us to a mini-waterfall.

We also tried the Tamborine Rainforest Skywalk, very similar to Singapore's Treetop Walk, except ours is free and this one was a whopping A$18.50 per person. A bit the expensive, methinks. The 40-minute walk was pleasant enough though. Just don't jump on the cantilever bridge.

Regarding the Newstead letter

I have unpublished the story regarding the abusive branch manager because the writer has been receiving hate mail and racist remarks.

This is ugly xenophobia rearing its head in Singapore, attacking someone who has received terrible service from a shop, just because he is a foreigner and gasp, organizes cycling events to promote road safety.

Anyway, Newstead is looking into it and will take the appropriate action.

Gold Coast: Our first day

Here are some photos from our first day. A big hoohah greeted us at Coolangatta aiport, Gold Coast. The wife and I slipped past all the festivities to clear immigration so that we could get into our car and begin our stay.

We drove towards Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary near the airport to check it out, partly because we had an iVenture card, a kind of all-in-one tourist attraction card. It was actually quite a nice place, filled with Australian animals like birds, koalas, porcupines and wombats. And really up close.

Some of the koalas were not real lah. Naturally, every souvenir shop in Australia carries a koala soft toy of some sort. My wife was determined to buy one for the kids. I told her to hold off till we were about to go home. I guess the Koala is the Merlion of Australian tourist souvenirs.

I promised some photos of our cottage in Mount Tamborine too. Here you go, The Polish Place, run by Phil and Ania Sowter (since 1983!). It is really cozy and lovely.

Our balcony overlooks the greatest view evar. And I mean EVAR.

And at night, we had dinner served to us, made by Phil himself. It was an awesome chicken and salmon. We also had some homemade tomato soups with homemade egg noodles. Eat until cannot move.

Another novelty for us for the fireplace. It was a REAL fireplace. I felt very manly putting pieces of wood into it, to keep it going. I felt like Davy Crockett or something (cue: Davy Crockett song). With tempartures hitting 10-12°C at night, the fire was a warm and cozy thing to have.

Our evening was spent talking and watching videos on our iPad (Australia television really cannot make it). And me occasionally running down to the first floor to put another piece of wood into the fireplace. King of the wild frontier, that's me.

Gold Coast: Our view from Mount Tamborine

The wife and I have settled into our lovely cottage at The Polish Place, in Mount Tamborine, in the hinterlands of the Gold Coast. We drove up yesterday in our Hertz rental car, after making a stop at a wildlife park.

Our Internet is a little spotty in the mountain but I managed to upload this iPhone 4S photo of the view from our balcony. Nice yes?

We will update with more photos when we are back from our hike in the trails. We need to work off the hearty brekkie I cooked in the cottage's kitchen. Haha!

We are scooting off to the Gold Coast!

The wife and I are about to depart for The Gold Coast on Scoot. It's their inaugural flight there and we are looking forward to some us time in the lovely city and its outskirts. We will be driving from the Gold Coast to the Sunshine Coast.

When I reached the Changi Terminal 2 airport entrance just before the immigration counters, I said to the officer, "Good evening."

And the police officer, upon checking my passport and boarding pass said, "Scoot evening. And have a good Scoot flight."

Funny guy. He made me laugh. I like.

The wife took an unglam photo of me grabbing a bite of Tai Wah Bak Chor Mee before we went to the gate. It will be nine days without Bak Chor Mee, ok?

Philips Home Lightover: mrbrown's Living Room, finished!

The Lightover is finally done! The new Philips lights were installed into my living room and I have to say, LED rocks. (If you haven't, you can read Part 1 and Part 2.)

Ambient lighting is provided by 13 downlights, lamps using myAmbience MR16 LED Bulbs.

The TV area was shifted to the opposite wall to create a space for the study. We now have a separately lighted space for the kids to do their work in the living room. That Ledino series lamp really floods the study table with enough light to work with. And it gives off very little heat too.

The kids have pretty much taken over the study area. They know how to turn on the Ledino lamp when they need to study there, or do their little paper projects. Joy even made a little tent there with her blanket and she and her brother "camped" beneath the table. When they are not using the space, the light is turned off and we rely on the ambient lighting to do stuff like watch tv.

At the play area, a very cute light with moon and stars was installed.

If you look to the left of the top photo, there is a Philips Decorative Presentation Fruit Platter. A little bit of whimsical fun, I thought.

To the left of the second photo, on my shelf of DVDs and CDs, are Philips IMAGEO CandleLights. These are really neat LED "candle lights" that are battery operated. You turn them on with a tilt. Because they are LED, they give off almost no heat and you can recharge the candles using the included induction charger.

The kids enjoyed playing with the candles that I had to stop them from doing it too much for fear they would drop my new toys. The wife now leaves them on in the house at night so that when I come home late, I can see my way around the living room.

My bicycles are now mounted on the wall, and lit with a Philips LivingColors LED lamp that comes with a remote and changes colour. Now my bicycles are no longer something the wife will complain as being in the way, but objects for display.

I also notice significantly less glare from the new LED light bulbs. I am going to look forward to less bulb changes (LEDs last for years and years) and the lower electricity bill.

My wife also got a Philips LED Reading Light to use for her Nook ebook (and paper books). It really lit up the reading area evenly.

We have gotten used to having different lights for different parts of the living room, as per our needs. I am such a fan of LED lighting solutions now that I bought other Philips LED lights for my kitchen dining area.

It's like getting a whole new living room, really. I think we are going to enjoy our newly lit space.
